Pre-conference workshop

There will be a pre-conference workshop on Wednesday 26th November, for post graduate students and other interested members. You can attend the workshop at no extra cost, but please do let us know whether you intend to attend the workshop when you register for catering purposes. The workshop will run from 09:30-17:00.

The workshop will focus on research interviews. Whether as a main source of data or as a supplement to other kinds of research, interviews are an important tool in studies across all areas of linguistics. From in-depth qualitative interviews exploring language attitudes in sociolinguistic context, through to eliciting translations in language documentation or grammaticality judgements in syntactic analysis, interviews are a flexible tool for exploring metalinguistic knowledge, based in a relational exchange between the researcher and research participants.

The workshop will present different approaches and tools across stages of interview-based research: planning and conducting interviews, as well as analysing the data and communicating the results. This will be a hands-on workshop with opportunities for participants to plan and conduct their own short interviews and reflect on their experiences within and beyond the workshop.

This workshop is primarily aimed at postgraduate students, but undergraduate students who would like to get a taste of further study in linguistics, and research staff who would like an opportunity to reflect on their practice and share their own experiences, are also encouraged to attend.
