Abstract

There are two conflicting phonological word-divisions in Maori, each of which is required in order to state certain rules of the grammar. Currently, only one term, ‘syllable’, is in general use, and there are times when this lends to confusion. It is the purpose of this note to propose a terminological distinction, and to outline some of the main rules which must refer to each of the divisions.
